Shipham AFC – inaugural end of season dinner celebrates reformed club

Since Shipham’s village football club was re-established last summer there has been considerable interest from all sorts of angles – participants, spectators, children, other local teams and even local businesses.

To celebrate the end of this first rejuvenated season Shipham AFC is pleased to announce their inaugural end of season dinner to be held on 27th June 2008, 8pm at Shipham Village Hall. The black tie evening will include a 4-course dinner, speeches, music and some amusing as well as serious awards. In particular the club will present a new award to “Clubman Of The Year” in the name of Noel (Noey) Cooke who was instrumental in many successful seasons of the original club and sadly passed away last month.

Shipham AFC was re-launched with a successful 5-a-side tournament in July last year to generate interest and attract new members, as well as to get the pitch back in regular use. A rather motley first team ran out 4-3 winners in a September friendly versus Axbridge surprising everyone, including themselves. This early success was followed by taking part in the Bristol Casuals League with ten home and away matches … the results quickly balancing out and proving that it really is the taking part that counts.

Whether you are a current member, past member, spectator, partner or just like an excuse to attend a party at the hall you will be welcomed at the dinner and awards evening. Tickets at £25 per head are available from Maxine Winby on (01934) 844 929. Priority will be given to current members.

Joy as football club reforms

After an absence of nearly 15 years Shipham football club has reformed.

As part of the re-launch, the new Shipham AFC is holding a five-a-side tournament to raise awareness of the club and encourage members to join.

New team manager Steve Midcalf said: "We have had enough interest to encourage us to enter the Bristol Casuals League where the average age of the team has to be over 35 and we are looking for players of all ages."

The club previously folded as playing members retired or moved away, but its trustees retained the playing field with the hope of eventually re-establishing a team.

Following an extraordinary meeting, the trustees of Shipham AFC has welcomed the support of a management committee with the aim of re-establishing the playing fields of Shipham AFC.

The village hall was built on land owned by the previously dormant football club.

The committee is working towards the common goal of establishing a well maintained sports ground alongside the village hall.

The club has already invested in a mower, goal posts and club kit, and has planning permission to build changing rooms.

Players are also starting a kickabout session on Monday evenings for those who want to improve their fitness and football skills.

Steve Dodd, the new treasurer, said: "We feel the playing field is forthe whole community to use, and this tournament is a chance for us to share our ideas with the community and have feed back on what others would like to see on the playing fields."
